About Practical Action Southern Africa
Practical Action (formerly ITDG), is an international technology development organisation with its head
offices in the United Kingdom. The organisation was founded in 1965 and has offices in Southern Africa,
East Africa, Sudan, Latin America, Bangladesh, Nepal and South Asia. Practical Action Southern Africa
office, based in Harare, covers work in Zimbabwe, Zambia, Mozambique and Malawi.
We work in partnership with communities and other development institutions and in all our
work, we respect diversity and show great concern for future generations. Specifically, we work
with communities helping them choose and use appropriate technologies to' improve their lives
today and generations to come. Our vision is that of a world free of poverty and injustice in which
technology is used to the benefit of all. We hope to achieve this by helping to eradicate poverty' in
developing countries through the development and use of technology and by demonstrating results,
sharing knowledge and influencing others.
Development consultancy
The Development Consultancy Unit is the consulting arm of the organisation whose mandate
is to spread the knowledge the organisation has amassed over the years, as well as raise additional
funding wherever possible for our projects.
It is also the aim of the organisation that in assisting other organisations meet their bligations; we also
acquire new knowledge, which we then use for the betterment of those we serve. Our consultancy
services are limited to the areas we have expertise in.
Practical Action’s core principles
People first
Our work with technology is people centred. It concentrates on what matters most to the people with
whom we work, respects their rights, and supports their own efforts to improve the quality of their lives.
Working in partnership
People living in poverty are partners in their own development. Practical Action can help them
to get access to information, knowledge and options to identify their priorities and choose the
way to deal with them.
A concern for future generations
Practical Action projects aim to be sustainable economically, environmentally, socially and
institutionaIly.
Respect for diversity
Practical Action policies and practices respect basic human rights of all people regardless of their
differences in terms of gender, ethnicity, religion or physical ability.
